Sacuony Run For Good Grant

Students and Parent Testimonials
OCE Land Lubbers club is lots of fun. It taught me how to pace myself when I run long distances.  My time for the mile went from 8:57 at the first club to 6:47 at the end of the season.  I also recently ran my first 5K road race.

OCE Running Club has inspired our whole family to get moving. Running club encouraged the kids to challenge themselves and gain the confidence they needed to run local 5K races.  They have convinced their Dad to race with them and the whole family is working towards a race in the spring.

Landlubbers has been such a great opportunity for Grace.  Going out and running has never been something Grace would have wanted to try.  But, being a typical 9 to 10 year old, she LOVES spending time and doing things with her friends.  This program has allowed Grace to have a setting (at school with friends) to do something (run) that she likely would not have had the desire to try otherwise.  As a result, I could see her self confidence jump which led her to be willing to try other things.
In the past she has never wanted to participate in the OCE Family Marathon.  This year, she was the one asking if we could do it.  In addition, she played Upward basketball at our church when she was 5.  She did not have the confidence and, thus, the desire to give it another try until this year.  I feel certain that this stemmed from the confidence that Landlubbers helped her to gain in her physical abilities.
We are thankful that there are teachers at OCE that care so much about the students that they are willing to spend the time to share their love of running with them.
Thank you!

I would say, I believe the Landlubbers club was a great success.  It was a fun way for our children to get exercise in a relaxed, encouraging environment.  It also instilled a sense of pride and healthy competition with the kids on how fast they could run a mile!  As a parent, I loved it as another way to introduce a “new sport” and promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Cameron loved it and felt a real sense of accomplishment with being able to increase her endurance and reduce her times. She found it exhilarating and really looked forward to it.  Running as a group is always more fun J-- we, as a family, encourage exercise and healthy eating, so she likes having her own thing to do, too, instead of only with the family.  Definitely a positive activity and I’ve been told by other parents from other schools that we are so lucky to have it –along with the parent and teacher volunteers to make it happen.

“Running club is a after school activity. It is a good way to stay healthy. It is also a good way to hang out with friends and have a fun time.”  Jillian Stiehm, 5th grade
“The thing I like best about running club is that parents, teachers and staff run alongside the students.  It is different than most other clubs because adults are not only facilitators, they are participants.”
Betsy Stiehm, parent

Running club keeps me in shape.  I was able to run a 5k without stopping!
--Abby Sweitzer, Grade 5

The new equipment has allowed me to create challenging and fun obstacle courses for the runners.  The kids really enjoy the friendly competition when we have agility training races.
